The NZDF aptitude test: what it covers and why your score matters

The NZDF aptitude test covers four reasoning areas: numerical ability, inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning and mechanical reasoning. The result does more than screen applicants in or out: it influences which trades and roles you are eligible to apply for.

That last point is the one most applicants miss, and it changes how much the test is worth preparing for. Treating it as a pass/fail hurdle undersells it badly.

What is the NZDF aptitude test?

A timed aptitude assessment sat during New Zealand Defence Force recruitment, used to help match applicants to trades and roles across the Army, Navy and Air Force. NZDF's own preparation material describes four reasoning areas, and the emphasis varies with the trade you are applying for.

Why does your aptitude score affect which trades you can apply for?

Because the Defence Force is not filling one job. It is filling dozens of technical, trade and officer roles with different demands, and aptitude testing is part of how it works out where an applicant is likely to succeed. What is inductive reasoning?

Working from examples to the rule. You are shown a sequence and have to infer what governs it. Nothing tells you the rule: finding it is the task.

What is deductive reasoning?

The reverse. A rule or set of conditions is given, and you apply it to reach a conclusion that must follow. The failure mode here is importing an assumption the question never stated.

What is mechanical reasoning?

How physical things behave: which way the second gear turns, which lever arrangement takes less force, what happens to pressure when a cross-section narrows. It rewards intuition built from having handled physical things, which is why it is the area where preparation makes the biggest difference for applicants who have not.
