About NZ Police

New Zealand Police recruitment runs through initial application and background checks, online testing, the Physical Appraisal Test, a realistic job preview, a formal interview and final checks before the candidate pool and the Royal New Zealand Police College. The online testing stage is where preparation pays, because it is not a knowledge test, you cannot revise facts for it. Asessly practises the reasoning it draws on: numerical, verbal, abstract and situational judgement, under time.

Questions about Asessly itself
What is on the New Zealand Police online test?

Reasoning rather than knowledge. New Zealand Police publicly describes numerical reasoning, verbal reasoning and comprehension, abstract and non-verbal reasoning, situational judgement, and written English accuracy as part of its recruitment testing.

Can you actually prepare for a cognitive test?

You cannot revise the content, because there is none. What preparation removes are two costs that have nothing to do with ability: unfamiliarity with each question format, and the time lost working out what a question wants before you start answering it.

Are these the real NZ Police recruitment questions?

No. Every question is original Asessly content written to practise the same reasoning areas New Zealand Police publicly describes. This is not the official recruitment assessment.

Is situational judgement something you can practise?

Yes, but not by memorising answers. You practise a consistent framework for weighing safety, integrity, escalation and communication, which is what transfers between scenarios. Asessly explains the reasoning behind every option, including the plausible wrong ones.

What is the pass mark?

New Zealand Police does not publish one, and we will not invent a figure. Recruitment is competitive, so performing as well as you can matters more than clearing a threshold someone quoted on a forum.

Where does online testing sit in the recruitment process?

Early, and it gates everything after it. New Zealand Police runs online testing before the Physical Appraisal Test, the SCOPE job preview, the formal interview, background and final checks, the candidate pool and a wing place at the Royal New Zealand Police College. The psychometric stage is an ability assessment plus a personality profile, and applicants without NCEA Level 2 or 3 literacy also sit an additional literacy assessment, POST, after passing it.

How long should I prepare for?

Three to four weeks of short daily sessions suits most candidates, roughly twenty hours in total. Spacing beats volume on timed reasoning, because what improves is retrieval speed.
