About NZ Nursing (NCNZ)

Nursing students in New Zealand sit the Nursing Council's state final examination at the end of their programme, and must pass it, along with an assessment against the Council's standards of competence, before they can register and hold an annual practising certificate. The examination is about applying competence in the New Zealand context rather than reciting facts, which is why Asessly's preparation is organised around five domains: health law under the HPCA Act 2003 and the Code of Rights, medication safety and calculation, clinical practice, cultural safety and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and professional communication.

Common questions

About NZ Nursing (NCNZ) and how Asessly prepares you for it.

Questions about Asessly itself
What is the NCNZ state final examination?

The Nursing Council of New Zealand's examination, sat at the end of an approved nursing programme. Passing it, alongside an assessment against the Council's standards of competence, is required before a graduate can register as a nurse in New Zealand. Candidates normally have three attempts, and normally sit within a year of completing the qualification.

How is this different from NCLEX preparation?

NCLEX-RN is a United States examination. The New Zealand state final is governed by the HPCA Act 2003 and the Code of Rights, carries cultural safety and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations, and uses New Zealand prescribing conventions. Asessly practises the New Zealand context.

What does Asessly cover for NCNZ preparation?

Five domains: New Zealand health law and professional responsibility, medication safety and calculations, clinical practice and assessment, cultural safety and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and communication and interprofessional practice.

Are these real state final examination questions?

No. They are original Asessly questions written to practise the same competencies. We do not have official examination material and would not use it.

Does an Asessly result affect my registration?

No. Asessly is an independent preparation platform. It has no connection to the Nursing Council, it does not deliver the examination, and no Asessly score affects registration in any way.

How and where is the state final examination sat?

At Pearson VUE test centres in Aotearoa New Zealand, not at your school of nursing. The nursing knowledge section is 81 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 110 minutes, each with four options and one correct answer, and there are no scheduled breaks — a toilet break is allowed but the timer keeps running. You have six months from the date of your invitation to complete it.

When should I start preparing?

Most students find six to eight weeks of structured revision enough, layered on a programme that has already taught the content. Starting much earlier tends to fade, because revision without recent clinical context does not hold.
