About NZ Citizenship
New Zealand does not currently require a knowledge test for citizenship by grant. On 6 May 2026 the Government announced one: 20 multiple-choice questions, sat in person in English, with a pass mark of 15 out of 20, planned to apply to applications from late 2027, covering topics including the Bill of Rights Act, human rights, voting rights, democratic principles, the structure of government and travel to and from New Zealand. This product prepares you for those announced topics, and for the civics knowledge worth having either way. It is not preparation for a test that exists today.

Common questions
About NZ Citizenship and how Asessly prepares you for it.
Questions about Asessly itselfIs there a New Zealand citizenship test?
Not currently. New Zealand does not require a knowledge test for citizenship by grant today. On 6 May 2026 the Government announced one: 20 multiple-choice questions, sat in person, with a pass mark of 15 out of 20, planned to apply to most adult applicants for citizenship by grant from late 2027. Applicants under 16 and over 65 are not expected to sit it, and it is not planned to apply to the citizenship by birth, descent or Western Samoa pathways.
So what is this product for?
It prepares you for the announced topics and for the civics knowledge worth having either way: government and Parliament, elections and MMP, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and New Zealand history, rights and responsibilities, and the citizenship process. It is not preparation for a test that exists today.
Will practising here help my citizenship application?
No. Asessly practice has no effect on a citizenship application. We are not affiliated with the Department of Internal Affairs and we have no role in the process.
Where do the announced test details come from?
A New Zealand Government announcement published on the Beehive site in May 2026. Details can change before a test is introduced, so confirm the current position with the Department of Internal Affairs.
Will the citizenship test cost anything?
The Department of Internal Affairs has said there will likely be a fee for each attempt, on top of the citizenship application fee, but no figure has been published yet. DIA has also said it will make study material available before the test becomes a requirement.
Should I wait until the test specification is published?
If your only goal is passing a future test, waiting is reasonable, because the specification is not published yet. If you want to understand how New Zealand is governed and what citizenship involves, the content stands on its own.
