About Motorcycle Licence

A class 6 learner licence has an extra gate at the very start: you must pass the basic handling skills test before you can be issued the licence, as well as the 35-question theory test: 25 general road-rule questions and 10 motorcycle-specific ones, with at least 32 correct required. Asessly practises the general rules alongside the rider-specific material: hazard perception around parked cars and intersections, road position, wet-weather following distances, LAMS and learner conditions.

Common questions

About Motorcycle Licence and how Asessly prepares you for it.

Questions about Asessly itself
What does the motorcycle licence process involve in New Zealand?

A basic handling skills test first, then the theory test. The order catches people out: you must pass the BHST with an approved motorcycle riding instructor before you can apply for your class 6L learner licence, not after it. Instructors set their own fee for the BHST. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi publishes the current requirements and sequence.

What does the motorcycle theory test cover?

Road rules as they apply to riders, hazard awareness, positioning, protective equipment, and the licence conditions that apply at each stage.

Are these official test questions?

No. They are original Asessly questions written from publicly available material. We do not issue licences or administer either test.

Do car road rules transfer to a motorcycle licence?

Much of the road-rule knowledge does, but positioning, conspicuity, hazard reading and protective equipment are rider-specific and are exactly where car drivers tend to lose marks.

How does the motorcycle theory test compare with the car one?

Same shape: a computer-based, 35-question multiple-choice test made up of general road code questions plus specialist questions for the class you are applying for. What changes is the specialist half, which is where rider-specific knowledge is tested.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. Five original questions are free, each with an explanation, and no account is needed.
