About Heavy Vehicle Licence
Heavy vehicle learner licences run on the same 35-question theory format as a car licence, with a higher pass requirement and a different emphasis: around ten questions cover heavy-vehicle specifics such as documentation, weight limits and logbook requirements, and the rest apply general road knowledge to a much larger vehicle. Asessly practises the class map (class 2 medium rigid through class 5 heavy combination), work time and rest requirements, Road User Charges, loading and axle limits, and the fatigue management that the rules assume rather than replace.

Common questions
About Heavy Vehicle Licence and how Asessly prepares you for it.
Questions about Asessly itselfWhat does the heavy vehicle licence theory test cover?
The heavy vehicle road code: rules specific to classes 2 to 5, vehicle dimensions and mass, load security, logbooks and work time, and the handling differences that come with size and weight.
Which class do I need?
It depends on the vehicle's gross laden weight and configuration. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi publishes the class definitions and the progression between them, and that is the source to check before booking.
Are these official theory test questions?
No. They are original Asessly questions written from the publicly available heavy vehicle road code. We do not issue licences or administer theory tests.
Does a car licence prepare you for this?
Only partly. Work time and logbook rules, load security and mass limits have no equivalent on a car licence, and they are where most of the unfamiliar content sits.
Does every heavy vehicle class have a theory test?
No. Class 4 has no theory test, and if you have already passed the Class 3 theory test you do not sit another one for Class 5. Where a theory test does apply it is the same 35-question computer-based format as a car learner licence, but the pass mark is higher: at least 33 correct rather than 32. Completing an NZTA-approved course for a class also removes the six-month learner period and the practical driving test for that class.
Can I try it before paying?
Yes. Five original questions are free, with explanations, and no account is needed.
